Tax Return For Exam Markers
Marking papers might come naturally to you but when it comes to doing your own tax return, it can feel like a completely different subject. If you’re working as an exam marker in London or anywhere in the UK, you’re classed as self-employed for tax purposes. That means you’ve got to deal with the Self Assessment tax return every single year.

FAQs – Tax Return for Exam Markers in London
Do exam-markers need to file a self-assessment tax return in the UK?
Yes — if you mark examination papers (for example for GCSE, A-level or university degrees) and receive fees, you will usually need to complete a self-assessment tax return, even if the income arises as occasional work.
How is exam-marking income treated for tax purposes?
The HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) classification depends on the nature of the engagement. For many “examiner/marker” roles it is treated as employment-income, with PAYE deductions at source.
What is the £1,000 trading allowance and how does it apply to exam-marking?
If you earn up to £1,000 of self-employed income in a tax year, you may not need to declare it or pay tax on it. If exam-marking income is treated as self-employed then you may use this allowance.
Can exam-markers claim expenses or deductions related to home-working?
Yes — if you carry out marking duties at home, you may be able to claim a deduction for use of home as workspace. HMRC’s guidance states that deductions should relate to the “extra” costs incurred while the room is in use.
How should I report exam-marking income on the tax return?
If treated as employment income, you’ll report under employment income and include tax already deducted. If self-employed, you’ll report under self-employment (or “other self-employment”) — including gross income, tax paid at source, and allowable expenses or the trading allowance.
What about National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for exam-markers?
If treated as self-employed, you may be liable for Class 2 and Class 4 NICs depending on your profits. If classified as employment, NICs are generally handled under PAYE.
When is the tax return filing deadline for exam-marking income?
The filing deadlines align with standard self-assessment: for online returns the deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year (which ends 5 April). Ensure you include all exam-marking income for that year.
What happens if I only earn a small amount from exam-marking?
If your earnings are below the £1,000 trading allowance and the work is occasional, you may not need to submit a return solely for that income — provided you have no other self-employment or taxable income. However, if tax has already been deducted and you are due a refund, you may still need to file.
